Bourgeois Observations

Lies behind her teeth

At the party she will drink,

Skull down her sorrows and catch a wink

Of the boy who breaks her heart inside.

On the swings beneath the trees,

She takes a draw and her head starts to spin,

When everything looks uncertain

She lights one up and breathes it in.

When she has too much to say, too much to shout

She pulls out a pin, to slit her skin

And watch the blood pour out.

Her dinner is purged from her secretive lips

Just wants to be like the other girls

She wants smaller hips.

It’s almost midnight and she is lying alone,

Tears roll down her cheek as she looks through her phone,

Three missed calls from dad

She aint seen him in weeks so she’s feeling real bad.

He just wants to get close, but she pushed him away

She remembers the tears and the pain,

Hoping he would be back one day.

In her head she is asking ‘why is life so cruel?’

Maybe that’s why she’s reckless, why she breaks all the rules.

There are secrets behind her teeth; her smile is a mask,

That’s why she always says ‘I’m fine’ when anybody asks.

She is completely and utterly besotted by him. For too long has she teared up over illusive perceptions of affection between herself and the boy who consumes her. For too long has he mislead, misread and misdirected this girl into believing he could never love her back. For too long he has hidden his emotions, but now he is exposed and afraid. Afraid of truth, afraid of consequences, afraid of future.  He is afraid because the wall he worked so hard on hiding behind is starting to crumble and fall.

And this, this is what I call love. It can weaken even the strongest of hearts.
